Unsettling Noises Coming from Downstairs

This week, I hung wallpaper in a home in the Heights neighborhood of Houston while the family was out of town. I would be working, deep in “my zone,” doing math and plotting layouts and smoothing paper onto the walls and balancing on top of an over-high ladder … and then hear a noise from the front of the house.

Not the lawn guys outside with their leaf blowers, and not the mail carrier pushing letters through the slot, but a real, unidentifiable sound inside the house. Creepy.

It took some sleuthing, but I finally found the source of the hair-raising sound. It was the ice maker dropping new cubes of ice into the freezer.
