Why Is This Paper Peeling Back From The Wall?

As you can see from the photo, it’s not just the wallpaper that has released from the wall, but the paint / primer underneath it.

This could be due to one or more of several things:

~Unstable wall surface due to incompatible paints and other coatings over 30 years

~Improper wall prep before hanging the wallpaper

~Teenaged son taking looong steamy showers throughout his highschool years.

These kinds of “loose seams” can be difficult to paste back, because it’s hard to get the underlying paint and other surfaces to stick back to the wall. Wallpaper paste is designed to hold wallpaper, but not these other substances.

In this case, I had luck using my standard wallpaper paste. But this is just a Band Aid. Eventually, the better option would be to strip the wallpaper, completely seal and resurface the walls, and then hang new wallpaper.

For now, though, hopefully I have bought this family a few more years’ use of their bathroom.

Oh – and the teenaged son has grown up and moved out. đŸ™‚
