A Twitter With Birds in a Powder Room

The homeowner was ecstatic with this cute and lively wallpaper. In fact, she said she has other bird-themed accents for her home (like framed Audubon prints), and worries that people might call her the “Crazy Bird Lady.” Well, no fear of that! This wallpaper pattern is very popular, and I have hung it many times in several colors.

This went in a powder room in the Heights, which has beaded-board paneling going about 4′ up the wall, a brick floor, a hanging pendant light fixture, and 12′ ceilings. The builder is Dee Todd-Simmons of HDT Builders, who works primarily in the Heights, and who does phenomenal work and exceptional quality on custom and spec homes – plus, she is great to work for.

This wallpaper pattern is called “A Twitter,” and is by Schumacher, and was bought at a discounted price from Dorota Hartwig at Southwestern Paint on Bissonnet near Kirby. (713) 520-6262 or dorotasouthwestern@hotmail.com. Discuss your project and make an appointment before heading over to see her.

Because it was Schumacher, I anticipated printing defects, and I was not disappointed – I had to discard a certain amount of paper due to printing flaws, and other strips I was able to engineer so that the flawed area would be cut off by door frames, etc.

A-Twitter-ing Again

Today was the third time in 2014 that I have hung Shcumacher’s “A Twitter” – once in their “Winter” (grey) colorway, and twice in this more lively version.

The first shot shows the powder room’s original wallpaper, a classic savoy pattern. Savoys are classic patterns and therefore relatively timeless. But since they hit a heyday in the early ’90’s, they could seem a little dated here and now, well into the new millennium.

The new pattern is a definite update, fun and cheery, while still staying true to classic themes and colors.

I hung this wallpaper in the Kelliwood subdivision of Katy, Houston. I have come to expect defects and problems from this brand, but today was pleased to find no difficulties at all.

Fudging the Pattern to Eliminate a Seam

Here I am working around a door and on to the left, and ending at a bank of cabinets. There is a seam smack down the middle of that 10″ wide space. I preferred to not have a seam there because 1.) the fewer seams, the less chance of curling or loosening, 2.) it was an awkward spot and two narrow strips of paper are difficult to work with and keep straight, 3.) one strip goes faster than two.

So I found a place on the pattern where I could cut along a tree branch and splice it in at the top of the door molding. I made sure that the branch was pointing in the same direction as the other branches over the door, and I plotted to get as many whole birds in that 10″ space as possible.

Dang me – I forgot to take a picture of it when it was finished. But trust me, it looked great, you could not detect that the pattern was slightly off, and there are no seams distract the eye or worry about peeling up.

The wallpaper pattern is called “A Twitter,” by Schumacher.

Lucky Lady’s Laundry

It’s a lucky laundress who gets to work in this utility room! This wallpaper pattern is named “A Twitter,” and it is quite popular – this is my second time to hang it this year! This color way is called “Winter,” and it’s all greys and taupes and blacks. It goes beautifully with the putty colored cabinetry in this room. The homeowners are going to add flat black door knobs and handles, which will play off the black in the chickadees and really set the room off!

With a paper-backed vinyl paper, you might worry about humidity causing the seams to curl. But this product is made of paper, not vinyl, and is much more resistant to humid conditions.

I hung this in the Montrose neighborhood of Houston, in a wonderfully rehabbed older home.

Happily All A-Twitter in a Powder Room

Here’s a cheery pattern for a powder room! This wallpaper is by Schumacher, and is called “A Twitter.” This is the second home I’ve hung it in.

Typical of wrapping and shipping, there was a smudge near the top of one roll, from packaging. And typical of Schumacher these days, there were a number of specks of ink stuck into the paper. Most were small enough to be insignificant, but some caused me to throw away some yardage of paper.

The walls in this room were very crooked and bowed, and I had to pull some tricks out of my hat to keep the pattern looking matched and straight.

The interior designer for this job in River Oaks (Houston) is Elizabeth Mann of Hattaras Interiors. Please e-mail me if you would like her contact information.

Garden Oaks Home Tour 2012

April 24, 2012

I went on the Garden Oaks Home Tour this past Sunday, and am happy to report that, unlike the Heights Tour, one of the homes had wallpaper. And I installed it!!

Schumacher A-Twitter 5005031 stylized birds in stylized trees filled the entry, and was the first thing that hit you when you walked into the home.
