Faux Wood Plank Wallpaper in a Country Home Bathroom

Revisiting a boy’s bathroom in a client’s second home in Carmine (Round Top), that I hung in 2016 – way before the Joanna Gaines craze for all-white rooms wrapped with “shiplap”.

Shared by two teenaged boys in a country home in tiny Carmine, Texas, this bathroom started out with boring builder’s flat paint. The faux wood plank wallpaper pattern is rough and rustic, and the perfect choice for a boys’ bathroom with a window that overlooks a farm pond and a green cow pasture. O.K. – that sounds mundane. But if you could stand in the bath and look out through that window, as I did all day while hanging the paper, you would see how perfect this choice is.

It is also absolutely perfect with the tile, which carries the same hues of grey, brown, and blue.

I railroaded the paper (hung it horizontally), to create this interesting “cabin wall-like” effect. Gravity works differently with wallpaper that is stretching across the wall, rather than hanging down it, but the learning curve was easily mastered, and it turned out great.

This wallpaper pattern is by Rasch, a German company, and features a slightly textured vinyl surface bonded to a non-woven backing. It is a paste-the-wall product that was thin and pliable and nice to work with (as opposed to other thick, stiff, non-woven material). The homeowner consulted with Dorota Hartwig at Southwestern Paint on Bissonnet near Kirby, who helped her zero in on just the right pattern and color. Dorota sells wallpaper at a discounted price. I’ve had a week-long job hanging wallpaper in Carmine (near Round Top and La Grange), Texas, about 90 miles northwest of Houston. It’s a new home on family farm land – and I’m getting to spend the night! 🙂

Below are more pics of the view, and of the job itself.

My Commute ….

I just spent several days hanging wallpaper in a new home on family farm land in Carmine (near Round Top and La Grange), Texas, about 90 miles northwest of Houston. Of course, it rained buckets this week. Here are shots of my commute from my van to the house. Luckily, the homeowner advised me ahead of time to bring boots!

The mud you are looking it is slippery and sloshy and deep. On my first day, it was thick and sticky and bonded itself to my boots with a vengeance. Imagine hauling a 7′ long, 30lb work table, or a 50lb bucket of wallpaper paste back and forth through this!

Driving shoes off and boots on to walk through the mud. Boots off to walk through the house. Boots back on to walk back to the truck. Boots off and clean driving shoes on before getting into the truck. Repeat many times per day.

Wouldn’t you love to go to sleep with this outside your window?

I am lucky this week, because that is exactly what I am doing. I’m working on a farm in Carmine, Texas (near our beloved Round Top), 90 miles northwest of Houston, and am spending some nights there.

Let your mind’s eye add cows and horses, and let your mind’s ear add crickets and tree frogs.

Yeah – I’ve got a great job. 🙂

Soft Mossy-Green Floral in Country Bathroom

This pretty floral pattern in a small scale and a mossy green color went in a teen aged gal’s bathroom in the family’s second home in the country outside Carmine, TX (near Round Top and La Grange), 90 miles northwest of Houston. The bathroom window looks out over green fields and a blue sky. What harmony!

The pattern and color blend perfectly with the paint in the girl’s adjoining bedroom, as well as with the faux-wood wallpaper in the attached powder room. (See previous post)

This wallpaper pattern is in the Easy-Walls, Chesapeake collection by Brewster, and is a pre-pasted paper product. It is thin and pliable and was a positive delight to work with, and can be expected to stick tight to the wall for a looong time. There was an ever-so-slight bit of shrinkage at the seams (hair’s breadth), but that is typical of this type of paper, and is much preferable to the curling and peeling that some solid vinyl papers can exhibit.

It was bought at a discounted price from Dorota Hartwig at Southwestern Paint on Bissonnet near Kirby. (713) 520-6262 or dorotasouthwestern@hotmail.com. Discuss your project and make an appointment before heading over to see her.
