More Pictures from Yesterday’s Rifle Paper Installation : Centering the Pattern

You don’t see it right away when you’re close, but when you stand back and view a larger expanse of paper on the wall , OR pull the pattern up on your phone, it’s evident that this pattern has a strong central image (the red roses in a circle ) , as well as a secondary image , which is the heart-shaped blue green leaves .
Here I’ve centered the ring of roses in between the two medicine cabinets , as well as between the light sconces.
This makes for a pleasing look of symmetry in this master bathroom .
Something that most people would not even notice concretely . But there would still be a feeling of equality and balance as you spend time in this bathroom .

I tweaked things a bit, to make this scheme work. Then I got the design centered on the wall seen to the left in this photo . The pattern also landed pretty near centered over the door .
Additionally, I love the way it looks, peering from one room into the other , all nicely lined up .

But ” balancing the pattern ” is much more than futzing with the vertical elements. For instance, there are also horizontal motifs to consider.
With this “Wildwood” wallpaper pattern , I wanted to place the red flower “circles / hayloes ” where they would be evenly distributed ” ) .
So, as you can see, I have “balanced” those red circles (three of them) evenly between the ceiling and the wainscoting.
In addition, the homeowner worked hard to find a fun and fresh wallpaper pattern that included colors that worked well with the glossy murky blue tile and chairrail .

This design is called Wildwood and is from York (the company who makes Rifle Paper material ).

Entwined Circles Geometric Fills a Massive Living Room Accent Wall

This couple wanted to warm up their living room, inject some color and personality, and visually define the space as separate from other areas of their open-concept main floor.

The wall is 11′ high and nearly 22′ wide. With that massive a space, you need a design that will stand up and fill the wall.

They considered a couple of options, before falling in love with this pattern of interlocking silver circles on a dark blue background with agate / stone swirls.

This is a non-woven product, and I hung it using the paste-the-wall method. The material doesn’t expand when wet with paste, and is designed to strip off the wall easily when it’s time to redecorate. This one was a little stiffer and thicker than I would have liked, but it went up nicely enough.

Tweaking the Pattern to Get a Better Layout

In this dining room, I hung the paper around the upper portion of wall first. Then I had two options for papering the column below.

One was to line the balls up with the pattern above, so they fell in a perfectly plumb line. This would have moved the centers of the balls a little to the right of the center of the post.

The other option was to make those dynamic circles really the focal point of the column, by giving them center stage. I placed them so their centers were smack in the middle of that central angle. This allowed the full ball to show, with none being cut off at either edge of the column.

It’s a little out of alignment with the pattern above. But this was a much better way to dramatize an already-bold pattern, and really draw the eye to it. Hey, if you’re going to use a wild pattern like this, punch it up every way you can!

Wow! Talk about fooling the eye! I was at the wallpaper store this morning, picking up paper for a client. I was in a hurry to get off to my job. But the sales gal said I had – HAD – to look at this new wallpaper sample book she had received. Boy, am I glad I did!

This book is called 3D, I forget the manufacturer, but Dorota, the seller person, can get it for you.

Anyway, these are some of the most realistic and intriguing wallpaper patterns I have seen! They truly look like they are three-dimensional. They have paper that mimics brick, stone, wood, logs, honey combs, quilted walls, floating circles, George Jetson-era “amboeas,” and fun-house I-can’t-tell-which-way-is-up designs.

I’ve seen other similar attempts before, but this book is truly fabulous. You don’t notice that the texture is not real, until you get really, really close. They are a fabulous fake / faux! These papers would be fantastic in a contemporary home, for someone who likes mid-century modern, or for someone who wants a rustic look.
