This wallpaper is the final touch to a remodel of this contemporary style home in the Rice University area of Houston. The husband asked, “Are you sure you want that, Honey? It looks so outdated.”
Ha ha! The wife and I just looked at each other and grinned. We both know that this sort of pattern is really hot right now. Even the gift shop at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City is selling Marimekko mugs and accessories!
The material is non-woven, and I used the paste-the-paper method for the complicated area around and under the sink, and for the two plain walls I switched to the paste-the-wall method.

Not only did this clever design and light background brighten up the space, the homeowner exclaimed how it also made the room look larger.
This is an under-the-stairs powder room in the Woodland Heights neighborhood of Houston. Originally, everything was black – walls, woodwork, floor, ceiling. The sink / mirror wall was the exception, being covered with white tile.
What a perfect fit is this scene of whimsical animals in a forest setting, in black on white.

The subway tile and flowers actually have a little more blue than comes through in the photos. Either way, it’s a really cool look for this small powder room with its teeny trough sink. The large flowers visually expand the area and make the room look larger.

Boy, did I have fun with this one! Another all-white room rescued from the igloo-look.
This is the bathroom of a pre-teen gal in the West University neighborhood of Houston. She likes pink and orange, but is too old for flowers or girly stuff. Another focus was to keep in theme with the bold black band of tile around the top of the wainscoting.

This is a non-woven product, and can be hung by the paste-the-wall or the paste-the-paper methods. (I pasted the paper.) This material is dimensionally -stable and should not shrink or put tension on the wall as it dries. It has high fiberglass content, and is designed to pull off the wall easily and in one piece when it’s time to redecorate.
The husband wasn’t sure he wanted this paper in their home bar area. The wife and I decided that it was sooo cute and charming, it was going up, hubby’s approval or not! 🙂 (Don’t worry – he loves it!)
This playful pattern is by Marimekko, and is a non-woven material. I hung it by pasting the wall (instead of the paper), which was ideal for this one accent wall with no turns or intricate cuts.
An interesting feature is that the company engineered this so that the glasses and goblets did not cross any seams. Also, they were aligned so that whole figures could be placed at the top of the wall, with none being cut off as the paper was trimmed at the ceiling.
This allowed me to put the motifs I wanted smack at the top of the wall on every strip – even if the ceiling line was not level, or if the side walls were not plumb.
This makes for a much more pleasing view of the wallpaper.
The home is a mid-century modern gem in the Piney Point neighborhood of Houston.
This 9 year old boy is all into camouflage. He has camouflage-colored tile in his bathroom, and just had to have this fun and quirky camouflage tree wallpaper for an accent wall in his bedroom.
That’s fine for him, but I had my work cut out for me … Turns out this paper has a multiple drop pattern match. Hard to explain, but it relates to how the design motifs repeat themselves across the wall overall. And it is a h3ll of a bugger to figure out how to cut the strips and place them on the wall. Matching the pattern can eat up a lot of paper, too.
Nevertheless, I got ‘er done, and the homeowner’s son loves it.
